Canon Introduces Three New HD Camcorders

canonhg21.jpg

When camcorders first launched decades ago the image quality was bad, the cameras were huge, and lots of tapes were needed to record anything. Today camcorders are very small, image quality is now often HD, and tapes are mostly a thing of the past.

Canon introduced three new camcorders that all record to internal storage in full 1080p HD resolution. The camcorders are all in the VIXIA line and record in 24Mbps bit rate in AVCHD format. Canon says that 24Mbps is the highest bit rate that can be used in the AVCHD format and makes for more detailed and smoother video recordings.

The VIXIA HF11 records up to 12 hours of HD video to 32GB of internal flash storage and has a SDHC slot for additional memory when needed. The VIXIA HG20 can record up to 22 hours of video to a 60GB internal HDD and has a SDHC card slot. The final camcorder is the HG21 with 160GB of storage — recording up to 45 hours of video — and a SDHC card slot for expansion. The camcorders will be available in September with the HG11 selling for $1199, the HG21 for $1299 and the HG20 for $949.

myguide_micatcher.jpg

The new m.icatcher is a new point-and-shot camera from MyGuide that comes with the advent of GPS photography, also known as geo-tagging, let’s the camera can also record the picture’s geographic location. In theory, to match the photos with their locations, both the pictures and the GPS data are uploaded (usually via USB cable) to a computer. With specialized software (e.g. mapping software like Google Earth), the computer compares the time stamp of the photo to the time stamp from the data on the receiver to attach location information to each photograph. And this process called Geotagging a.k.a Geocoding and refers to adding geographical information such as latitude, longitude, altitude, and place names to various forms of media. Depending on the mapping software and the type of receiver, the photos can be labeled and organized according to their location.

MyGuide was showing off the m.icatcher at IFA in Berlin and the camera will be available in Europe from October 2008.

Stocks open higher after Wednesday's rout

NEW YORK - Stocks jumped Thursday after the previous session's massive rout, but safe assets such as gold and Treasury bills still saw heavy demand as investors braced for more instability in the financial system.
Following the bailout of insurer American International Group Inc., the Federal Reserve and other major central banks around the world on Thursday joined forces to inject as much as $180 billion into global money markets in an attempt to keep the credit crisis from worsening. The Fed added another $55 billion in overnight loans Thursday.

But fears have not fully receded. Market participants are still trying to determine how to proceed in what is looking to be the most troubling period for the world's financial system in most investors' memory.

The big fear on Wall Street is that there are more significant financial companies to fall. Speculation is swirling about the futures of such major players as thrift bank Washington Mutual Inc. and investment bank Morgan Stanley. Media reports have been saying that Wells Fargo & Co. and Citigroup Inc. are interested in a possible takeover of Washington Mutual, and that Morgan Stanley and Wachovia Corp. are in talks about a possible combination.

In the first hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 135.65, or 1.28 percent, to 10,745.31.

Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 20.98, or 1.81 percent, to 1,177.37, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 37.13, or 1.17 percent, to 2,135.98.

Monday's 504-point loss in the Dow was its biggest drop since the drop following the September 2001 terror attacks. The blue-chip index is now about 24 percent below its Oct. 9, 2007, record of 14,164.53.

On Wednesday, the 3-month Treasury bill — considered one of the safest short-duration assets — saw demand surge so high that its yield briefly dipped into negative territory for the first time since 1940.

In early trading Thursday, the prices for short-duration Treasurys dipped from Wednesday's levels. But the yield on the 3-month T-bill was still extremely low at 0.14 percent — up from 0.1 percent late Wednesday, but well below its yield of 1.60 percent just a week ago.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.43 percent in early Thursday trading from 3.42 percent late Wednesday.

US: 7 soldiers die in helicopter crash in Iraq

BAGHDAD - Seven American soldiers were killed in southern Iraq early Thursday when their helicopter crashed as it was flying into the country from Kuwait, the U.S. military said.

The CH-47 Chinook helicopter did not come under attack, the military said. It believes the crash was an accident.

"At this time we are uncertain of the cause, but hostile fire has been ruled out," military spokesman Maj. John Hall said. "The other three helicopters in the flight did not have incident or injury."

The four-helicopter convoy was flying from Kuwait to the U.S. military base at Balad north of Baghdad when the crash occurred shortly after midnight in the desert about 60 miles west of Basra, the military said.

The military said the seven who died were the only people on board. The Chinook, the Army's workhorse, is designed to transport troops and supplies to combat and other regions.

The crash occurred in an area of Iraq that is under British military control. A British quick reaction force and road convoy were dispatched to help American officials at the site. An investigation into the cause of the crash was under way.

It was the deadliest helicopter accident for U.S. troops since Aug. 22, 2007, when a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed in northern Iraq, killing all 14 U.S. soldiers aboard. The last accident that took this many lives was on Sept. 10, 2007, when seven American soldiers were killed in a vehicle accident in western Baghdad.

"It is a tough day for the coalition and we are deeply saddened by the loss of our soldiers," said Col. Bill Buckner, another military spokesman. "Our prayers and condolences go out to the families during this difficult and tragic incident."

The military did not release the names of those killed pending notification of next of kin.

The military also said Thursday that a U.S. soldier died from non-combat related causes in eastern Baghdad Wednesday. That brings to two the number of non-combat deaths on Wednesday; they occurred in separate incidents, the military said.

Since the 2003 U.S.-led war in Iraq, 4,168 members of the U.S. military have been killed, according to an Associated Press count.

Deadly violence continued in Iraq Thursday.

An explosives-laden car parked at a bus station in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah killed two people and wounded one, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. Nasiriyah is about 200 miles southeast of Baghdad.

Narrow Victory for Livni in Israel

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni won a narrow victory on September 17 to become leader of the ruling Kadima party, the first step in her bid to become the next prime minister.
Livni, 50, an earnest, straight-talking former lawyer, defeated her closest rival, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, an ex-general, by a 1.1% margin. Livni won 43.1% of the vote compared to Mofaz's 42% - so close that some Mofaz stalwarts are insisting on a recount. Voter turnout in the Kadima primaries was also so low that the Haaretz newspaper noted acidly that ten times more Israelis turned out to cast their ballots for the country's version of "American Idol" than to pick the candidate likely to become the next premier.

Livni now has 42 days to cobble together a governing coalition. If she fails, Israel is likely to face general elections within three months.

The leadership battle inside the centrist Kadima party erupted when Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was pressured into resigning by his party after police said he faced a possible indictment for alleged fraud and bribery. Even before the corruption scandal broke, Olmert's standing in the polls was abysmally low; blamed for a disastrous military campaign in Lebanon in 2006, his approval rating sank to 3% in the war's aftermath and remained in the single digits. At an exhibition hall in Tel Aviv rented by Kadima on election night to handle the media and party faithful - and where press outnumbered supporters three to one - Olmert's portrait was conspicuously absent, much the way that U.S. President George W. Bush was relegated to near-invisibility at the Republican convention.

Olmert's aides say he is likely to step down on September 21, after conferring with President Shimon Peres. On tour in the Negev desert while his party voted, Olmert told a group of students: "I decided to resign with pain, not with pleasure, I must say, really with pain." He added, less convincingly, "I have no bitterness, no anger." Olmert was hoping that the primaries race between Livni and Mofaz would be forced into a run-off, giving him a few extra weeks at the helm.

Livni wants Olmert out. She is eager to take over, telling her supporters after her win that she wants to form a new cabinet "as quickly as possible in the face of serious threats facing Israel." Israel's Generals say the nation's gravest threat is the possibility of a nuclear attack from Iran, though it now appears doubtful that Israel alone, without a green light from Washington, would launch an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Livni has her work cut out for her. In the days ahead, the new party head will try to lock up support from Kadima's current coalition partners - the dovish Labor party, a group representing pensions and the ultra-orthodox Shas party - which could give her a slim majority in the 120-seat Knesset or Israel parliament. But Shas is making demands on Livni, such as pushing for an increase in child allowance (ultra-orthodox families tend to be large) and making state education more religious. If Livni bends to Shas' demands, Labourites are threatening to walk out of her future coalition. But if she succeeds, she will become Israel's first woman prime minister since Gold Meir stepped down in 1974.

Knesset member Yitzhak Ben-Yisrael said he supported Livni's bid to become Kadima leader because "she was someone clean who believed in fair play." Livni, he says, is likely to pursue the U.S.-sponsored peace talks with the Palestinians. In interviews, Livni says she believes in a two-state solution with the Palestinians as the only way for Israel to remain a Jewish and democratic state. Yet she will face the same lack of support for the peace process among her hawkish coalition partners, and Kadima party members, that thwarted Olmert.

Livni says one of her favorite hobbies is playing the drums. Her apartment neighbors are probably grateful that now she is Kadima party leader, and on route to becoming prime minister, she won't have time to bang away. But it will be one long drum roll in the weeks ahead to see if Livni can form a new governing coalition.

Pictured: The Spears family reunited at last after years of very public feuding

They are the very picture of a happy family - perched on the kerbside they chat and laugh as they admire the latest addition to the family.

But just months ago this scene would have been unimaginable. Back then Britney Spears was estranged from her mother Lynne and younger sister Jamie Lynn.

But there was no hint of the horrors of the past year as the teen idol celebrated her two sons' birthdays yesterday with a family reunion.

Together again: After years of acrimony, Britney and her mother share a tender moment with Jamie Lynn's daughter Maddie Briann on the curbside outside Britney's LA home yesterday

She spent a relaxed day with her mother Lynne, father Jamie, 17-year-old sister Jamie Lynn and her three-month-old daughter Maddie Briann.

Jamie Lynn had flown in from her home in Louisiana to Los Angeles to celebrate the birthdays of Britney's sons, which are only two days apart.

Sean Preston turned three on September 14 and Jayden was two on September 12. It is not clear if their father Kevin Federline, from whom Britney is divorced, was present at the party.

Hands on: The Spears women reconnect with each other after a year of strife

Looking at the family portrait it seems incredible to think that in June last year the 26-year-old served her mother with a restraining order to stop her having any contact with her grandsons.

Then in January, in an image that shocked her fans, she was pictured sobbing uncontrollably on a kerb at the side of the road with only her puppy for comfort.

Teenage beauty: Angelina posed in these modeling pictures at 16... before going on to adopt a far less clean-cut image

And the carefree innocence of 16-year-old Angelina's grin has been replaced by a perfect Hollywood smile.

These photos, which have just come to light, were taken when Angelina was an aspiring unknown.

The rebellious daughter of actor Jon Voight, Angelina's teens were a tumultuous time for her. At 14, she was permitted to move in her older boyfriend into her mother Marcheline Bertrand's LA home and later dropped out of acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

Estranged from her father, she has since admitted to suffering bouts of depression, but went on to return to theatre studies and graduate from Beverly Hills High School.

At 16 Angelina had already perfected her pout

The young unknown had naturally glossy teeth, skin and hair

Sixteen years on and the twice-divorced actress is a mother-of-six, having just given birth to twins with her partner Brad Pitt. They are now the proud parents of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline born in July, Shiloh, two, and adopted children Zahara from Ethiopia, Pax from Vietnam and Maddox from Cambodia.

Since the shoot Angelina has courted controversy with a shock red-carpet kiss with her brother James Haven and a bisexual relationship with Calvin Klein model Jenny Shimizu. She even wore a vial of her then husband Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck.

But in the past five years and with an Oscar under her belt for Girl Interrupted, Angelina has tamed her wild child ways, successfully transforming herself into a box-office star, UN goodwill ambassador and mother.

It's official - England is the MOST crowded country in Europe, thanks to immigration

England has become the most crowded major country in Europe, official figures show.

The number of people crammed in has overtaken those in Holland, long the most densely-populated major nation on the continent.

A count released to MPs showed England now has 395 people per square kilometre.

Crowding has increased because of high immigration into England while the Dutch population has fallen or remained steady.

Population growth: Official figures show England has overtaken the Netherlands to become the most crowded country in Europe

Last night MPs who are campaigning for 'balanced migration' said the figures were a milestone in the immigration debate.

Beyond Europe, England's population density is among the highest in the world. Of countries with a population of at least 10million, England ranks third in density after Bangladesh (1,045 per sq km) and South Korea (498 per sq km).
